Hands as Companions of the Mind: Essential Practical Life for the 5-Year-Old
Gilder, Sharon Allen
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v24 n3 p24-29 Fall 2012
Numerous observations in Montessori classrooms led veteran Montessorians Pamela W. Trumble and Eleni Bokas to the conclusion that a universal need exists to bring integrity back to Practical Life, especially for 5-year-olds. Maria Montessori's observations over a century ago revealed the importance of Practical Life and its relationship to the development of skills that pediatric neuropsychologist Steven J. Hughes refers to as "executive functions". Executive functions include cognitive processes, such as attention, concentration, planning, organization, problem-solving, initiative, and self-regulation. There may be nothing more essential to the scope of the Montessori curriculum, and to meet the needs of the whole child, than Practical Life. It is, in essence, the catalyst for real-world preparation. In this article, the author talks about the core of Practical Life and presents 10 Practical Life lessons that are designed with the 5-year-old in mind.
