South Tahoe: A Model for Career Tech
Kisel, James
Educational Facility Planner, v46 n1 p5-7 2012
With the help of close to $30 million in grant monies from Career Technical Education (CTE) and Overcrowding Relief grants, and Joint-Use and High Performance grants, Lake Tahoe Unified School District and architect LPA, Inc., have already completed a CTE "Green" Construction and Transportation Academy, a new classroom building and the Tahoe Arts and Design Academy (TADA). Construction is underway for a new Campus Commons Student Union and later this year, a Sports Medicine Academy. But what's unique about this five-phase master plan is that in addition to outperforming California's stringent Title 24 energy code by 20%, each space was carefully researched and programmed to offer students an exciting and innovative place to train for technical careers. In this article, the author discusses how five new state-funded facilities--including a green construction and transportation academy and a Hollywood-class arts and design academy--are transforming South Tahoe High School into a career tech haven.
