Plain language involves more than just a few simple techniques, such as using everyday words, short sentences, and active voice. Although there is no single definition, "plain language" basically stands for several dozen well-established principles of clear communication. In this article, the author discusses the significance of plain language writing in government policies and procedures. The benefits of expressing policies and procedures in plain language are many--not just for the government, but for any organization. Plain language writing saves government time and resources, increases reader understanding, improves compliance, reduces reading time, and helps clarify policy.
