The Role of Phonological Awareness and Visual-Orthographic Skills in Chinese Reading.
Siok, Wai Ting; Fletcher, Paul
Developmental Psychology, v37 n6 p886-99 Nov 2001
Examined role of phonological awareness and visual-orthographic skills in Chinese reading acquisition among first, second, third, and fifth graders who had learned the Hanyu Pinyin script. Found that visual skills predicted reading success at lower grades; pinyin knowledge and ability to discriminate homophonic characters predicted reading success in grades 2, 3, and 5; and onset-rime awareness predicted Chinese reading.
