In this article, the author shares her "When pigs fly" story to initiate a discussion about how educators might broaden their understanding of "learning." She shares the lessons she has learned from her son who has Asperger's syndrome. As professionals in higher education, educators adjust organizational and educational structures to accommodate learning styles all the time. But, in fact, attitudinal barriers often impact learning far more than any organizational barrier ever could. Catherine Lord, a clinical child psychologist known for her longitudinal studies of children with autism, describes Asperger's syndrome as a developmental disorder falling within the autistic spectrum affecting two-way social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and a reluctance to accept change. Like many parents of Asperger's children, the author has had to teach her son how to interact and cope in a social world where the rules are not written in a book that he can read. As she creates a successful learning environment that her son can understand, she thinks about the needs of students with Asperger's in the collegiate setting.
