Teaching Technical Communication in the Two-Year College: A Status Report.
Pickett, Nell Ann; Angelo, Faye
To determine the status of the teaching of technical writing in two-year colleges, a survey was conducted of 1,202 two-year institutions in the 50 states. Questions concerned enrollment patterns, number of technical communication courses and teachers, number of years technical communication courses have been offered, prerequisites for courses offered, purpose of the courses, transferability of each, textbooks used, major units of study, and institutional priority of technical communication. Among the major findings were the following: (1) the major units of study were short reports; short papers of process, description, and classification; business correspondence; and job application materials; (2) 79% of the institutions had prerequisites for technical communication in English or in the student's major or in both; (3) 41% permitted technical communication to substitute for one or more required writing courses; (4) 8% of the total student enrollment was enrolled in technical communication; and (5) the most often used textbooks were those by Pickett/Laster, Lannon, and Houp/Pearsall.
