Celebrating Mathematics All Year 'Round
Daire, Sandra Arguelles
Mathematics Teacher, v103 n7 p509-513 Mar 2010
Celebrating mathematics should be a yearlong event in which students in mathematics classes of all levels engage in mathematics activities and competitions that will encourage growth in mathematical knowledge, enthusiasm for the subject, and collaboration among students of different abilities and backgrounds. Pi Day and Pi Week festivities--a good place to start--can be a springboard to mathematics celebrations. This article features a program called Mathlete Boot Camp in which students celebrate mathematics throughout the year. Six major celebrations are held during the school year, involving much more than the mathematics department. The ultimate goal of the six Mathlete Boot Camp monthly celebrations is for students to learn and have fun. The author emphasizes that as teachers complete such activities, their students will grow in knowledge and understanding of mathematics. (Contains 5 figures.)
