This paper explores the convergence of technology and the arts within the context of aurality in the twenty-first century. Jenkins argued this is taking place within a cultural convergence, whereby a vernacular culture focused upon participation, creation, performance, and migratory behaviour of media audiences has emerged. The developing changes to the creation and use of media technologies impact and intensify adolescents' experience of auditory expression and multi-modal performative experience. These changes have tremendous import and expand possibility within school music education. This paper conceptualises a twenty-first century understanding of aurality and: (1) develops contextual understanding of the terms orality, aurality, oral/aural culture, and secondary orality; (2) conceptualises secondary aurality as a phenomenon; (3) explores the impact of secondary aurality on creation processes for adolescents and discusses this within the design of current multi-media technologies; and (4) posits practical application to school music settings with the purpose of potentially including and engaging all adolescents.
