Closure: It's More than Just Lining Up

The value of effective lesson planning for optimized learning is a well researched and established concept in education. Although different formats exist for lesson planning, most contain common components, including a structured ending. One common term for a planned ending to a lesson is closure. Unfortunately, not all lessons are well planned and the end of a lesson can often receive short shrift for a variety of reasons. For many teachers, there is just not enough time to cover everything they want to teach. Others find getting students in a line and back to their homeroom on-time can be a major task at the end of a lesson. Beyond those examples, some teachers aren't aware of the concept of closing a lesson or how it can benefit them and their students. Regardless of the reason, lesson closure is an essential, yet frequently missing, part of a lesson. Madeline Hunter is credited with the term "closure" as one part of her seven-element lesson plan format. Since physical education teachers often use a direct teaching style, Hunter's format is a natural fit because it reflects a more direct style of teaching and helps students learn lesson content quickly. However, Hunter valued teacher creativity and criticized rigid application of her concepts, thus creative thinking about the use of closure and other components of Hunter's format can also be useful and effective with more indirect styles of teaching. With this in mind, this article focuses on lesson closure strategies and effective modifications for use in physical education classes.
