Meeting Active Start Guidelines in the ADC-Ridgecrest Program: Toddlers
Wall, Sarah J.; Rudisill, Mary E.
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v15 n2 p21-24 Mar 2004
Through experiences with toddlers at the ADC-Ridgecrest Physical Activity Program, the authors have found there are many ways to encourage and promote the "Active Start" guidelines through play. Their research and collaboration with early childhood specialists suggests that toddlers like to play and that it is particularly important in the overall development of the child. This article provides strategies and suggestions for setting up a physical play environment that will encourage motor skill development in toddlers. These strategies are based on the authors' experiences and observations. By using the strategies suggested here to set up the physical play environment and keep it challenging, toddlers can easily accumulate their 30 minutes of structured physical activity (guideline 1). The enjoyment and confidence this engenders should help motivate children to be more physically active throughout the day, thus fulfilling the requirement for unstructured physical activity (guideline 2). The environment discussed in this article will help develop toddlers' fundamental motor skills, which in turn act as building blocks for more complex motor tasks (guideline 3). Finally, by modeling activities and becoming involved in physical play, teachers facilitate children's movement skills and demonstrate awareness of the importance of physical activity (guideline 5).
