Potential Influences of Exergaming on Self-Efficacy for Physical Activity and Sport
Krause, Jennifer M.; Benavidez, Eddie A.
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v85 n4 p15-20 2014
Screen time, including video gaming, has been perceived to be a major catalyst for the lack of physical activity among youth. However, exergaming has pierced the technology and physical activity scenes with a twist, and happens to be redefining how technology and "screen time" are now being viewed as catalysts for increasing physical activity. Exergames can provide physical education, after-school, recreation, and other programs an opportunity to get young people physically active and potentially interested in a variety of sports and activities. They can help to replace sedentary screen-time activities while also contributing to the recommended daily dose of physical activity. It is clear that exergaming is gaining popularity among many groups. It is thus important to understand how exergaming could affect future physical activity and sport involvement.
