A Solid-State NMR Experiment: Analysis of Local Structural Environments in Phosphate Glasses
Anderson, Stanley E.; Saiki, David; Eckert, Hellmut; Meise-Gresch, Karin
Journal of Chemical Education, v81 n7 p1034 Jul 2004
An experiment that can be used to directly study the local chemical environments of phosphorus in solid amorphous materials is demonstrated. The experiment aims at familiarizing the students of chemistry with the principles of solid-state NMR, by having them synthesize a simple phosphate glass, and making them observe the (super 31)P NMR spectrum, and making them quantify the phosphate environments in the glass by deconvoluting this spectrum.
