Technology education has had its directions as a school subject influenced by changes in society, the economy, politics, and homeland threats. The philosophy and curriculum content for technology education has had certain turning points due to these changes. During the twenty-first century, outside factors and internal research will continue to impact this school subject. A critical factor that will influence what is taught is the field and profession of engineering. This author states that it is important to realize that technology education is for all students, but that not all students want to be, or have the aptitude to become, engineers. Some students want to become entrepreneurs; others want to work in construction. Still others need to explore various careers that apply technology in their everyday ventures. Moving the curriculum in one direction only limits the capabilities of meeting the needs of a greater population of students. Technological literacy is needed by all learners.
