Laban Movement Analysis Approach to Classical Ballet Pedagogy
Whittier, Cadence
Journal of Dance Education, v6 n4 p124-132 2006
As a Certified Laban Movement Analyst and a classically trained ballet dancer, I consistently weave the Laban Movement Analysis/Bartenieff Fundamentals (LMA/BF) theories and philosophies into the ballet class. This integration assists in: (1) Identifying the qualitative movement elements both in the art of ballet and in the students' dancing styles; (2) Facilitating both the technical and expressive training of ballet dancers; and (3) Assisting the dancers in connecting their art form to their lives beyond the ballet classroom. This article approaches classical ballet pedagogy through one LMA/BF philosophy, Function/Expression, and two LMA/BF theories, Shape Flow Support and Shape Qualities. (Contains 5 tables.)
