The Philippine "Hip Hop Stick Dance"
Lewis, Lisa
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v83 n1 p17-21, 32 Jan 2012
This article introduces a dance that blends the traditional cultural heritage of the Philippines with modern music and moves. "Hip Hop Stick Dance" incorporates Tinikling (the Philippine national dance) and Arnis (a Filipino style of martial arts) to create a contemporary combination of rhythm, dance, and fitness. It was designed to introduce dance, especially folk dance, to individuals who normally feel uncomfortable practicing dance in their physical education classes. Using the rhythm of the clacking poles in combination with hip hop music creates a stage for mixing funky dance moves with the traditional folk style. (Contains 7 figures.)
