Index for Inclusion: Developing Learning and Participation in Schools.
Booth, Tony; Ainscow, Mel
The Index for Inclusion is a compilation of materials to support British schools in the process of inclusive school development. Part 1 introduces the Index, then identifies the following key concepts: inclusion, barriers to learning and participation, resources to support learning and participation, and support for diversity. Part 1 then introduces the review framework involving the dimensions of inclusive policies, cultures, and practices as well as review materials comprised of indicators and specific questions, and describes what schools can hope to achieve by using the Index. Part 2 explains the five phases of Index development, which are: (1) beginning the Index process; (2) finding out about the school; (3) producing an inclusive school development plan; (4) implementing priorities; and (5) reviewing the Index process. Part 3 presents the review materials, the indicators of the three broad dimensions and associated questions. Indicators focus on building community, establishing inclusive values, developing the school for all, organizing support for diversity, orchestrating learning, and mobilizing resources. Part 4 provides a summary sheet and five questionnaires for students, school staff and parents. Part 5 provides a bibliography and information on the Disability Equality in Education Training for Inclusion program. (Contains 60 references.) (DB)
