Exploring the World of Animals: Linking Fiction to Nonfiction. Literature Bridges to Science Series. Grades K-5.
Perry, Phyllis J.
This teacher resource book, designed to encourage student interest and build learning across the curriculum in grades K-5, is based on the theme of animals. Resource lists and activities in the book focus on the following sections: (1) animals as pets; (2) animals on the farm; (3) animals in the woods; and (4) animals in the wild. Each section describes subject-specific fiction and nonfiction materials, plus books that will lead young readers from fiction to nonfiction. The book's plot summaries, discussion topics, multidisciplinary activities, and student projects can help develop library research skills and link language arts to science, math, social studies, and the arts. The overall goal of the book is to help students make the transition from fiction to expository text. This book is one of a series which uses the power of fictional works to lead students from the world of imagination into the world of fact--fiction is used to build interest, increase familiarity with a topic, enlarge background knowledge, and introduce vocabulary. The book's nonfiction titles are chosen to represent the more literary treatment of a topic in contrast to a textbook-like stream of facts. A collection of poetry is also included in each section to broaden the reading options. The final section contains additional resources. (NKA)
