Pesticides, People, and the Environment
Miller, Roxanne Greitz
Science Scope, v29 n2 p64-68 Oct 2005
If a teacher were to ask his/her students what they do when they find ants or other insects in their homes, their most common response would probably be, "Get the bug spray!" Because students are not only being exposed to pesticides but are also developing patterns of behavior likely to continue throughout their lives. Discussions about pesticides, the controversies surrounding their use, and pesticide safety are important in the middle grades. This article discusses: (1) Different types of pesticides; (2) Why pesticides are used; (3) The evolution of pesticides; (4) How pesticides work; (5) Pesticide problems; (6) Children and pesticide problem; and (7) Student activities. A list of online resources concludes the article.
