Boys Booked on Barbershops: A Cutting-Edge Literacy Program
Brinson, Sabrina A.
Young Children, v62 n2 p42-48 Mar 2007
The barbershop is a community institution, one of the most familiar and stable businesses in any neighborhood. Men and boys frequent barbershops, and barbers get to know their customers by name and personality. Boys Booked on Barbershops (B-BOB) is an innovative literacy program designed to make the most of a naturally occurring opportunity: the wait for a turn in the barber chair. Participating barbershops set up reading nooks to encourage boys to read and adults to read to them. B-BOB partners stock their nooks with selected books to pique the interest of boys ages 1 to 18, but their emphasis is primarily on young boys. This article presents how B-BOB promote reading among children.
