There are limited studies in the literature on the factors that affect the academic success of foreign students in the United States. This ex post facto mixed method study investigated the factors that affect the academic success of foreign students at Cardinal Stitch University (CSU), a medium size, private university located in the Midwestern region of the United States. The purposes of the study were: (a) to investigate if there was correlation between success of foreign students at CSU and achievement tests (SAT/ACT) and selected demographic variables (gender, age and region of origin) and (b) to explore the combination of the independent variables (SAT/ACT, gender, age, and country of origin) that could best predict the success of foreign students at CSU. The key guiding questions were (1) to what extent if any is there a relationship between dependent and independent variables? (2) What gender differences exist in the dependent and independent variables? (3) What optimal combination of the independent variables will best predict the dependent variable? (4) How might the study findings influence the thinking and practice of admission counselors at CSU regarding admissions criteria and procedures? In this study, the independent variables were: SAT/ACT, gender, age, and region of origin and dependent variable was students' cumulative GPA. The quantitative method employed correlation analysis to investigate the relationship between the independent and dependent variables and this was followed by multiple regression analysis. The key findings are: (1) there was significant positive correlation between SAT math and cumulative GPA of foreign students at CSU (r = 0.48, p less than 0.05); (2) there was no significant correlation between cumulative GPA and the other independent variables (gender, age and region of origin); (3) There was no significant difference between the SAT scores of males and females, however, there was significant difference in the mean cumulative scores of males and females; (4) The study findings had an impact on the thinking and potential future actions of Admission Counselors at CSU. Multiple regression analysis revealed that SAT math was the best single significant predictor of students success measured as cumulative GPA. Findings from focus group data of the study also revealed that factors such as culture and personality factors (drive, confidence) were potential predictors of academic success of foreign students at CSU. The study also addressed the implication for practice, leadership, learning and service. Further research will be required that investigates the correlation between academic success and non cognitive factors (culture, and personality factors).
