This teaching guide for a tobacco education curriculum at the third-grade level is a part of a coordinated K-12 educational support program for reducing smoking. It includes a tobacco curriculum matrix for grades K-12, sample teaching methods, concepts and objectives for grades K-3, and a resource materials list. The basic instructional concepts for the third-grade level focus on helping students: (1) develop positive self-images to enable them to make responsible decisions regarding risk-taking behaviors; (2) recognize the adverse effects of smoking on physhical health; (3) identify the safety hazards of cigarette smoking; (4) understand how cigarette smoking can be habit-forming; and (5) assume personal responsibility for safeguarding their health. Objectives, teacher information, worksheets, and learning activities for each concept are provided. Additionally, the appendices list addresses of the New York county units of the American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association, and the American Heart Association. (Author/NRB)
