Challenges in Educational Management: Principles into Practice.
Dennison, W. F.; Shenton, Ken
Until recently, most educational managers, including head teachers and senior staff in schools, have performed their tasks without formal training. Today, however, many new courses are being established for the training of educational managers. This book provides a framework for such a course. It selects from existing literature, theory, and experience of management in other professions (such as business studies) and relates relevant material to the context of education. It looks at major themes and problems in educational management, discusses appropriate theories, and shows the application of good practices. Nine chapters cover the following topics: (1) changing demands, opportunities, constraints, and influences; (2) learning to be effective (the knowledge base and the skill base); (3) leadership demands, styles, and practices; (4) expertise and credibility (procedures, rituals, traditions, and visibility); (5) power and authority (conflict, negotiation, and change strategies); (6) change and response (teachers and stress and teacher attitudes, behaviors, and work patterns); (7) interpersonal perspectives on school management (e.g., personal qualities, self assertiveness and self-management); (8) communication; and (9) developing teachers and schools. Twenty figures are included. A 16-page bibliography, an author index, and a subject index are appended. (IW)
