Maintaining Job Satisfaction: Engaging Professionals as Active Participants
Woods, Amelia Mays; Weasmer, Jerie
Clearing House, v77 n3 p118 Jan-Feb 2004
Improving teachers' job satisfaction is paramount in an era when 50 percent of new teachers drop out of the profession in the first five years. Although most new teachers start the school year with eagerness, lack of administrative and collegial support, budget constraints, a flagging sense of personal teaching efficacy, and a controlled curriculum often squelch their enthusiasm. Without support in the tentative early years, they are not afforded a vision of the competence they may develop. This article discusses in detail the issues new teachers are faced with in terms of job satisfaction, and provides strategies for overcoming some of those issues. The following sections are included: (1) Sources of Teacher Dissatisfaction; (2) The Benefits of Collegial Investment; (3) Shared Leadership; (4) Support Meetings; (5) Mentoring; and (6) Lessening Dissatisfaction.
