An Analysis of Factors Contributing to the Academic Success of Transfer Students
Smith-Moore, Donna Lynn
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
Attrition is a growing concern among higher education institutions. Student retention has long been viewed as a measure of institutional effectiveness. The number of transfer students, particularly those who seek entry into postsecondary education by transfer from a two-year to a four-year institution, continues to increase. However, transfer students often face barriers to their academic success. The study was quantitative and used descriptive statistics to identify and analyze the factors and demographics that enable undergraduate transfer students to persist and obtain a baccalaureate degree at Wilmington University. Ex post facto data on transfer student graduates was extracted from the graduating classes of 2010 and 2011. Demographic factors analyzed included gender, age and ethnic origin. Academic factors analyzed included grade point average, degree major, number of credits transferred and whether or not an associate degree was completed before transfer to the senior institution. Employment factors were analyzed to determine the employment status of the transfer student graduates. The data show that transfer students are a sizeable population within the total number of the graduating classes. The transfer student graduates in this study were predominantly female, Caucasian and between the ages of 20 to 29. Most of the transfer student graduates were employed, and the majority was employed full-time. The largest number of transfer student graduates earned degrees under the College of Business; closely followed by those who earned degrees under the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The largest percentage of transfer student graduates had grade point averages between 2.67 and 3.66 when they completed their bachelor's degrees at Wilmington University. An overwhelming majority of the transfer student graduates transferred over 61 credits of previous college coursework, and the majority of transfer student graduates completed an associate degree before transferring to Wilmington University. The research indicates that transfer students will continue to comprise a significant percentage of the total student body at Wilmington University and at higher education institutions nationwide.
