Understanding and Managing Learning Disabilities in Adults. Professional Practices in Adult Education and Human Resource Development Series.
Jordan, Dale R.
This book reviews learning disabilities (LD) in adults and makes suggestions for helping adults cope with these disabilities. Each chapter covers a type of learning disability or related syndrome or explains characteristics of the brain. Chapter 1 explains several types of specific learning disabilities that make classroom performance difficult for 15 percent of the population. Chapter 2 presents new information about how the higher brain, midbrain, and brain stem work together in processing new information and building long-term memory; it also explains how differences in brain pathway development cause learning disabilities. Chapter 3 explores nonverbal learning disabilities, including right hemisphere LD, autistic spectrum syndrome, high functioning autism, right-hemi syndrome, and Asperger's syndrome. Chapter 4 presents in-depth information about social-emotional learning disabilities that disrupt society in destructive ways and explains the role of the limbic system (midbrain) in controlling antisocial emotions. Chapter 5 describes the wide range of disabling emotions and feelings, such as depression, mania, and anxiety, that often exist in persons with learning disabilities. Chapter 6 presents insights into the impact of learning disabilities as adults age. The final chapter reviews new and promising techniques for understanding learning disabilities in adults. The book contains 88 references and 3 appendixes: (1) a list of 12 guidebooks for managing learning disabilities in adults; (2) the Jordan Index for Asperger's Syndrome; and (3) the Jordan Executive Function Inventory.
