"March of the Penguins": Building Knowledge in a Kindergarten Classroom
Fingeret, Lauren
Reading Teacher, v62 n2 p96-103 Oct 2008
In this study, the author followed a kindergarten class that watched the film and used the book "March of the Penguins" in order to find out how much information the students learned from the film and how the teacher integrated the texts into her unit on penguins in order to maximize their impact. The students were given an oral assessment prior to the read-aloud of the book and viewing the film, immediately after experiencing the texts, then again four months later. Also, the author visited the classroom regularly and observed the teacher's instruction using these texts. The students learned and retained an enormous amount of knowledge about penguins, with a mean effect size of 2.94. Even though this is only one effective teacher's use of these texts in one classroom, the results reveal useful strategies for successful instruction and engagement. (Contains 4 tables.)
