Addressing Humanness in Education: Truth-Seeking Scholarship for Excelled Pedagogy
Austin, Kenneth R.
Teacher Education and Practice, v24 n4 p476-479 Fall 2011
Educators addressing humanness helps bring into focus a concept that developing a broad, liberal, critical, cynical, skeptical, and tolerant mind leads to truth seeking, personal freedom and autonomy, improved pedagogy, and ultimately, higher-quality living. It is not enough for teacher and student to come together in dialogue to gain knowledge of their social realities. They must act together upon their environment critically to reflect on their reality and so transform it through further action and critical reflection. Many educators identify with those who struggle and, in so doing, find their own meaning to life and their reasons to teach and improve their teaching. The difficulty lies in finding the courage to act in an honest and genuine way, despite the expectations and assumptions of others or a standardized working environment. This is the greatest challenge for teachers who would understand truth, not as they perceive it only, but as it truly is.
