Speech-language pathology literature is limited in describing the clinical practicum process from the student perspective. Much of the supervision literature in this field focuses on quantitative research and/or the point of view of the supervisor. Understanding the student experience serves to enhance the quality of clinical supervision. Of particular importance is the initial practicum experience. The success of this experience for a student clinician can impact his/her subsequent training and future career. Relatively few studies in speech-language pathology have addressed the initial practicum experience of students in this field. This study examined the lived experiences of speech-language pathology students in their first clinical practicum. The essence of this phenomenon was studied through qualitative analysis of weekly journals and in-depth interviews. Data was analyzed using a phenomenological methodology. Themes were identified that described the meaning of this experience for the speech-language pathology novice clinician. Data revealed the challenges, coping mechanisms, and professional outcomes for students engaged in this clinical training experience.
