Problem? "No Problem!" Solving Technical Contradictions

TRIZ (pronounced TREES), the Russian acronym for the theory of inventive problem solving, enables a person to focus his attention on finding genuine, potential solutions in contrast to searching for ideas that "may" work through a happenstance way. It is a patent database-backed methodology that helps to reduce time spent on the problem, encourages creativity, invention, and innovation, and steers a person in the direction of the solution more quickly, accurately, and efficiently. TRIZ is based on the analysis of millions of patents. It provides a road map toward the solution of difficult problems and speeds the development of innovations and inventions. Genrich Altshuller, the father of TRIZ, developed the Contradiction Matrix, which assists in the resolution of over 1,000 different contradictions without compromise. The application of TRIZ can offer a major advantage to the student innovator and inventor at the middle school and secondary levels. This article discusses the use of TRIZ contradiction matrix in solving technical contradictions. (Contains 1 figure.)
