My Lucky Day
Olvey, Maura
Teaching Children Mathematics, v16 n7 p384-385 Mar 2010
Teaching based on problem solving brings challenges for the teacher, primarily that of finding problems with multiple access points that accommodate all students. This article narrates the author's lucky day as she discovers the Four fours problem which impacted her passion for teaching math. The day she presented the Four fours problem to her classes was absolutely her lucky day as enthusiasm and intrigue filled the air. During the course of about a week, her two classes contentedly and enthusiastically worked through the Four fours problem in twenty-minute chunks of time. Her students' ongoing excitement inspired her to extend the problem in several ways. She concluded that she has been liberated from being a traditional math teacher and she has developed a passion for teaching math this year that she has never had before.
