Build Your Own Particle Smasher: The Royal Society Partnership Grants Scheme
Education in Science, n250 p16 Nov 2012
This article features the project, "Build Your Own Particle Smasher" and shares how to build a particle smasher project. A-level and AS-level students from Trinity Catholic School have built their own particle smashers, in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University, as part of The Royal Society's Partnership Grants Scheme. The project, "Build Your Own Particle Smasher," began in February 2012 and lasted around 14 weeks. It was made possible with a 1400 British pounds grant from The Royal Society. The Partnership Grants scheme offers up to 3000 British pounds of funding for schools which, through working in partnership with scientists or engineers, develop and deliver exciting and creative projects to engage young people with science. Keen also to share their experiences, students involved in the project have taught other A-Level physics students how particle accelerators work and how to build their own model, with this project hoping to spread into other schools.
