Using Your Values To Raise Your Child To Be an Adult You Admire.
Heath, Harriet
This book was written to help parents integrate their values into family life and pass them on to their children. The book helps parents: (1) know their own values; (2) understand what their values mean to them; (3) live by their values; (4) model values in ways children can see and understand; (5) realize what a child must know and be able to do to live by a value; (6) understand the developmental steps a child must go through to live by a value; and (7) recognize opportunities to teach values. The book's chapters are: (1) "Living with Values"; (2) "What Are Your Values?"; (3) "How Do Children Acquire Values?"; (4) "Values Can Guide Family Life"; (5) "Basic Needs Affect Learning"; (6) "Readiness To Learn Values"; (7) "Considering Temperament Patterns"; (8) "Working with Learning Styles"; (9) "Resolving Conflicting Values"; and (10) "Teenagers Need Values To Test." The book's concluding materials include analyses of 12 values. The analyses contain a definition of the value, behavior reflecting the value, knowledge and skills needed, insights about the value, whether the value is present at birth, how to teach or preserve the value for children of different age levels, influences on learning the value, and reflections about the value. Also included in the end material is a collection of exercises, a "Family Guide to Parenting with Values in Mind." These are: (1) identifying my values; (2) identifying my parenting partner's values; (3) analyzing a value; (4) resolving my conflicting values; and (5) resolving conflicting values between my partner and me. (Contains 13 resources.) (EV)
