African American Adolescent Mothers' Vocational Aspiration-Expectation Gap: Individual, Social and Environmental Influences.
Hellenga, Kate; Aber, Mark S.; Rhodes, Jean E.
Psychology of Women Quarterly, v26 n3 p200-12 Sept 2002
Investigated the vocational aspirations and expectations of African American adolescent mothers living in urban poverty. Data on girls from an alternative school for pregnant/parenting teens indicated that depressive and anxious symptoms along with childcare provided by relatives were associated with a gap between aspirations and expectations. Higher grade point average, living with biological parents, and having a career mentor related to a match between expectations and aspirations. (SM)
