Increasing Parent Knowledge of Extra-Familial Child Sexual Abuse through Development and Implementation of a Parent Program.
Bernbaum, Barbara Susan
This document describes a practicum designed to address the needs of the parents of children who have experienced extrafamilial sexual abuse. It notes that, in cases of extrafamilial child sexual abuse, services are directed toward the child and that the neglect of the parents may exacerbate the child's stress. The practicum is aimed at: (1) increasing parents' knowledge of myths about child sexual abuse, sexually abusive behavior, behavioral indicators of child sexual abuse, and effects of sexual abuse on family members; (2) understanding how parental reactions to child sexual abuse affects parents and families; (3) giving parents an opportunity to express feelings about the abuse; (4) building parental self-esteem and competency by learning child behavior management and safety strategies; (5) reducing parental stress and increasing coping skills; and (6) decreasing parental sense of being alone. The 8-week Parent Program developed and implemented to meet these goals is described. Evaluation results are discussed in which 100% of program participants responded affirmatively to almost every goal. The intensity of the group process and the unwillingness of the parents to separate at the practicum conclusion are indications of a need much greater than originally anticipated. The report concludes that the self-directed continuation of the parent group confirms that treatment must recognize the needs of both child and parent victim. The program curriculum and related materials are appended. (Author/NB)
