The home as the first place to teach a child has the responsibility of encouraging moral development. Every child is born into the warm embrace of parents and others who provide him a social environment. Throughout life, children are units of social processes. In interacting and relating to selves and the world around, they develop and use attention, mental images, creativity and adaptability. These factors touch on the feelings and sensitivities of people. They are relevant in explaining the level of the individual's success or failure in personal relations with others. Studies on child-rearing practices place more emphasis on parental control, attitude and overall pattern of parent-child relations as major determinants of discipline in children. What the child learns at home, and the family's motivation towards his education, contributes to his success in school. Merely seeing that the children are prepared for school in the morning is important for their academic achievement. Learners are products of different homes and they attend schools with home-related traits and characteristics. In some homes, parents are given to the constant use of arbitrary corporal punishment, in others parents use counselling and persuasion. Arbitrary punishment has been found to nurture in the individual subjected to it aggressive, hostile and antagonistic attitudes. On the family lies the foundation of the child's education. If the early education of the child is wrong, the child will start life at a great disadvantage and will suffer a great handicap in later life. Much more than that, the personality that the child takes to the school and the outside world is formed at home. If this foundation is weak or improperly formed, the school and other agencies of education will have little or nothing to build upon and the entire society may suffer. The impact of the socio-economic activities of parents has left some children unsupported and unsupervised in their homes.
