An Evaluation of a Parent Training Program
Nguyen, Quynh T.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This study examined the effectiveness of a parent training program whose children are diagnosed with autism. The sample consisted of families who are currently participating in a parent training program. The study examined the stress levels of parents utilizing the Questionnaire on Resources and Stress at the beginning of the study and then again three months later. The study also looked at whether the number of training hours parents received affected their stress levels. Finally, the study considered what parents felt were their primary needs when participating in a parent training program. The study was quantitative in nature and used a quasi-experimental pretest posttest design to measure stress level differences in families after participating in a parent training program for three months. The measures included the Questionnaire on Resources and Stress, along with a single question for parents to list their primary needs when participating in the program. The results of the Questionnaire on Resource and Stress indicated that the parent training program did decrease stress levels of parents. There was not a correlation between the number of hours that parents received and their noted stress levels. Finally, parents reported their primary needs as self help, communication, decreasing maladaptive behaviors, and play skills. The study concludes with a discussion on the limitations and suggestions for future research. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
