Parents often respond to challenging behavior exhibited by their children in such a way that unintentionally strengthens it. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a research-based science that has been proven effective in remediating challenging behavior in children. Although many parents could benefit from using strategies from the field of ABA with their children, most do not have access to a behavior analyst to teach them this information. A self-administered parent training program is one possible medium to impart this information. Similar programs have been effective in doing this, but the cost and duration of such programs are prohibitive to many families. To meet this need, the author created a self-administered parent training program for parents with children between the ages of 2 and 8 who have mild to moderate behavioral challenges. This training program was reviewed by a panel of five experts from the field of ABA and then edited to incorporate their feedback; subsequently, it was reviewed by 14 professional reviewers and revised based upon their recommendations. Overall, results from both the expert review and professional review indicate that the parent training program is an appropriate resource for parents to use. The author intends to publish this training program in order to make it readily available to parents. In addition, the author plans to perform research regarding its effectiveness with parents.
