Basic ESL Literacy from a Freirian Perspective: A Curriculum Unit for Farmworker Education.
Faigin, Sybil Barbara
This paper discusses the development and testing of a literacy unit in basic English as a second language (ESL) for Canadian farmworkers based on the Freirian principles of designing adult education curriculum. The Freirian approach looks at adult learners in the context of their daily reality and uses literacy as a vehicle for the students' personal, social, and political empowerment. Freire's philosophy and its implementation in North America are outlined, particularly in the areas of basic literacy and ESL instruction. Literature on ESL literacy and other areas related to farmworker education and ESL are examined. The curriculum unit, designed for the Canadian Farmworkers Union's literacy campaign, and a trial lesson with some of the unit's materials are described. The unit, using a videotaped drama concerning the rights of Canadian workers, is intended for native speakers of Punjabi, and provides a meaningful context for oral and written language instruction.
