Metrication. A Guide for Producers of Packaged Goods. Consumer Research Report No. 4. Second Edition.
Consumer and Corporate Affairs Dept., Ottawa (Ontario).
This guide, developed in Canada, discusses the benefits of the metric system to industry and consumers. The major rationale offered for adopting the metric system is that uniformity in standards will facilitate the increasing trend toward worldwide communication and world trade and thus benefit both producer and consumer. Possible specific changes noted involve standardized packages in round metric quantities, reduction of inventories due to standardization of supplies, and reduction of computation errors. Some practical effects of the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act for manufacturers are discussed along with the advantages and concerns involving dual labeling. A summary of schedule 1 of the Weights and Measures Act appears, with the more important metric units and their symbols given. Basic rules of writing metric quantities are presented for weight, length, area, and volume. The issue of cost is considered, revealing that most firms that have converted have found actual costs less than anticipated possibly because of savings from inventory reduction. (NJ)
