The Earl Lee Street Art Campaign
Bubba
Art Education, v66 n5 p46-50 Sep 2013
This article describes a catchy phrase with more to its meaning than first view. A slogan "All the girls love Earl Lee," appears in street art around the world. Earl Lee is a lovable, handsome man who owns the fictitious Earl Lube industries. Originally intended to bring a smile to people's faces at a time when there wasn't much to smile about, Earl Lee came to life as a humorous antidote to the "2008 depression," pasted on the myriad of empty, abandoned, and out-of-business storefronts, signs, and buildings in Southern California. The slogan "All the Girls Love Earl" is catchy and at first glance appears to be just another advertisement. However, a closer look rewards the passerby, who begins to take a journey with the artist to an alternative reality where nice guys do finish first. Earl Lee embodies every American's desire to be the best at what they do, while being the best person they can be. With a healthy respect for his fellows and unflinching determination to never back down, Earl Lee is the kind of man a mother would wish her son to grow up like, and every other woman on the planet could only wish to have the attention of. From California to Europe and the Far East… if there are beautiful women and a racetrack, you may see Earl Lee turn up there.
