Maintaining the Hegemonic Masculinity through Selective Attachment, Homophobia, and Gay-Baiting in Schools: Challenges to Intervention
Tharinger, Deborah J.
School Psychology Review, v37 n2 p221-227 2008
In this commentary, the author summarizes the research findings of the four articles from this special issue of "School Psychology Review," titled "Sexual Orientation, Homophobia, Bullying, and Psychological Sequelae in Adolescents: Research and Practice Findings," as well as suggestions for intervention offered by the authors of the articles. She discusses the heuristic of an attachment perspective, followed by the masculine hegemony perspective. In doing so, she advances that maintaining the masculine hegemony is in conflict with sustained and healthy attachment behaviors, and often results in selective attachment. She calls upon educators and mental health professionals to take a central role in educating teachers, administrators, parents, "and" students about the research evidence on the serious effects of bullying based on heterosexism, homophobia and gender nonconformity, and gay-baiting. She challenges school professionals to plan interventions that are informed by an understanding of the significance of attachment behaviors in promoting mental and relational health.
