The transition to middle school is an educational milestone, marking significant and sometimes unspoken changes in expectations. The overriding expectation is that students will become more independent. This article discusses some tips that will help teachers in teaching organizational skills to middle school students. Middle school teachers provide rules and structure that guide students on the road toward independence, but they sometimes forget to teach them how to navigate the curves. Middle school students are assumed to be old enough to remember to bring books home, finish a project without nagging, and write assignments down. It's easy to underestimate the organizational skills students need to juggle multiple assignments, especially when the subject matter is the focus. However, if teachers shift their attention to the process of learning, they can gain insights that will help them guide students along their journey. Teachers should understand the processes involved in organization and should note behaviors related to performance. The author suggests that to help students become more independent and responsible for learning, they first need to recognize the neurological underpinnings of behavior.
