Art How-to Books: Brush Up
Glasscock, Lisa
School Library Journal, v56 n9 p46-52 Sep 2010
It's no secret that books can be used by readers to learn new things. How-to books are published on various topics, and none are requested more often by children than art books. Tackling instruction in book form requires organization, creativity, and planning. Willingness to tailor a book's features and approach is essential to creating a successful guide. Additionally, there are certain characteristics called for in books on any art form for any age. An effective guide focuses on a particular audience. Books for the youngest artists generally speak to adults who will be guiding the process, while books for older children address readers directly. Some titles, such as MaryAnn F. Kohl and Kim Solga's "Great American Artists for Kids" are tailor-made for classroom use, while others work well one-on-one. Many books will indicate the skill level for a given project, which assists in pinpointing projects for a specific age or grade. A balance between breadth and depth is necessary. At times, a book about drawing horses is exactly what a child wants. Other times, titles that are more general in topic and scope are just the ticket, offering something for everyone. The best guides are clear about the materials needed and how to use them (and sometimes even where to get them!). Whether kids or teens are learning about drawing, sculpting, or various art forms, a good collection should offer the perfect match. This article provides a list of art how-to books.
