Communities are at the heart of the government's vision for the Big Society. And it's the author's strongly held view that skills should be at the heart of each and every one of those communities. If one grows the skills of an individual then the community will flourish. There is a job to be done in building skills to build communities--skilled communities which can rise to the challenge of empowerment. So, it is all about decentralising and redistributing power and accountability, not just from Whitehall to local government but also giving responsibility to communities, neighbourhoods and individuals. That might mean encouraging organisations and individuals to get involved in positive social action on a small, neighbourly scale or through large collective actions to save local facilities and amenities. Colleges and other providers are already engaging with their communities in support of the government's Big Society agenda.
