Elementary Music: Curriculum Guide, 1989.
Alberta Dept. of Education, Edmonton. Curriculum Support Branch.
This music curriculum guide for the required music component of the fine arts curriculum in Alberta (Canada) covers concepts, skills, and attitudes, as well as enrichment and integration activities. Concepts are the intellectual framework of the music program and are divided into five elements: (1) rhythm, (2) melody, (3) harmony, (4) form, and (5) expression. These are taught through the six skill areas of singing, playing, listening, moving, reading and writing, and creating. Positive attitudes are to be engendered through student participation in the skill areas. Two sections of the guide on concepts and skills respectively, are in the form of scope and sequence charts, and each section includes several enrichment and integration activities that may be added to that section. Concepts and skills are numbered sequentially, and this enumeration correlates to a teaching resources reference chart which matches those numbered aspects to specific page references in four major music education texts as well as additional resources. This allows the curriculum guide to be used with a variety of texts. The Kodaly and Orff methods are both introduced, as are methods and techniques involving movement, guided listening, the recorder, handbells, and the ukulele. Several possible evaluation procedures are given. A resource summary includes basic series, teachers resources, and professional organizations. Numerous photographs illustrate the guide. (PPB)
