In order to determine if there is an adequate amount of storage in the elementary classrooms of the South Bend Community School Corporation, 180 teachers representing a random selection of 30 percent of all K-6 teachers were sent a questionnaire by means of the school's mail service. Responses from 97 (54 percent) of the sample were utilized. Respondents answered questions that identified the items being stored and the types of storage facilities available, and evaluated existing storage. Teachers were also asked what type of storage they preferred, and if they had ever been consulted on the design of a school building. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) the items most commonly stored and also the most difficult to store are large and odd-shaped (charts, posters, and bulletin board items); (2) a larger percentage of lower-grade teachers believe they have less than adequate storage than do the teachers of fifth and sixth grades; and (3) because so few of the respondents had been consulted in the design of classrooms, it is felt that more teacher involvement in planning might result in more efficient storage design.
