This instructional manual contains 20 learning activity packets for use in a workshop on lasers and fiber optics. The lessons cover the following topics: what a laser; coherent light; setting up the laser; characteristics of the laser beam; scattering of light; laser beam divergence, intensity, color, ophthalmology, and reflections; directivity of laser beam communication systems; simultaneous amplitude and polarization; measurement of glass thickness and liquid level; laser beam intensity control by polarizers; splitting the laser beam by parallel glass and by prism; light pipes and fiber optics; laser amplitude modulated communcation; and simultaneous amplitude and polarization modulation of the laser beam. Each learning activity packet lists prerequisites, purpose, and competencies to be developed and provides information sheets, illustrations, and learning activities. (KC)
