The Value Priorities of Young People in the Siberian Region
Orlova, V. V.
Russian Education and Society, v52 n7 p59-68 Jul 2010
This article discusses the implications of the survey results involving young people in the Siberian Region on their value priorities. In the process of their socialization, special importance attaches to the problem of the value priorities of young people. Among these, in the authors opinion, it is possible to single out both spiritual and moral values as well as social and legal values. The survey "The Traditions and Values of Young People" was carried out among college and university students, employed and entrepreneurs ages twenty-four to twenty-six. The survey showed that very often, concepts of morality and ethics take on the character of anachronisms, and to follow them means to doom oneself to failure. The opposite point of view is held by a majority of the young people: 52 percent are convinced that the fundamental moral norms have not succumbed to the influence of time and still remain relevant and up to date. Many respondents acknowledged that the difficulties they encountered have forced them to take serious stock of their values. As a result, most young people (55 percent) feel compelled to acknowledge that their success in life depends largely on their ability to ignore their own principles and to agree with the thesis that "today's world is harsh, and in order to achieve success in life sometimes one has to step over his/her moral principles and norms."
