Designed to assist educational researchers in utilizing microcomputers, this paper presents information on four types of computer software: writing tools for educators, statistical software designed to perform analyses of small and moderately large data sets, project management tools, and general education/research oriented information services and specific databases. For each category, recommendations and explanations for use are given for some specific software packages. For word processing, nine possible program characteristics are also listed to aid in comparison shopping. In addition, special enhancement programs for proof reading assistance, punctuation and style aids, and thesaurus help are given. Information on statistical analysis and project management software includes program title, publisher, and a brief explanation of its use. Two professionally oriented databases--DIALOG and Bibliographic Retrieval Services (BRS)--are described together with their special services for personal computer users. The services of three popular personal databases--COMPUSERVE, DOW JONES NEWS/RETRIEVAL and the SOURCE--are also described, as well as a microcomputer software search assistance system--InSearch. A list of 13 databases useful to educators and trainers is provided which includes explanations of equipment and telephone network requirements for accessing them. (JB)
