This publication is designed to provide students with the knowledge they need to pursue a career in medical-surgical nursing. Eight units are provided. Each instructional unit includes some or all of the basic components of a unit of instruction: performance objectives, suggested activities for the teacher, information sheets, job sheets, written tests, and answers to assignment sheets and written test. Most units of instruction are designed for use in more than one lesson or class period of instruction. Unit topics are as follows: applying basic principles of medical-surgical care; providing care for patients with community-acquired infectious diseases; providing care for patients with common medical-surgical complications; providing care for the oncology patient; providing care for the patient with pain; providing care for the postoperative patient; and providing care for the intraoperative and post-anesthesia recovery patient. Academic skills training is combined with vocational training throughout the instructional materials. To assist teachers in identifying activities that promote basic skills development, a marking system of simple graphic symbols, or icons, is used to denote which of the following nine general basic skill categories is being emphasized: reading, science, creative thinking/problem solving, writing, oral communication, employability, math, interpersonal skills, and social studies.
